about me
My name is Jason Kinney,
I was introduced to Yoga in 2001 through an incredible Iyengar teacher named Zenith Manwell (a longtime student of Mr. Iyengar himself), while studying science at Delta College in Michigan. The strong focus on alignment in the Iyengar method gave me a powerful foundation from which to explore the many forms and interpretations of Yogasana and meditation.
Many years of extensive travel throughout the United States and abroad have given me the opportunity to broaden my perspective and see first hand the amazing diversity, difficult lessons and boundless love in our world.
After earning a degree in evolutionary biology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, I began focusing intently on deepening my Yoga practice. It wasn't long before I met Lewis Rothlein and discovered Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga of K. Pattabhi Jois. It quickly became apparent that this practice was well suited to me.
Because of my intensive introduction to asana practice, I was able to begin sharing that knowledge with others right away. Then, after more than a decade of practice and study, completing a Yoga Alliance certified course at Asheville Community Yoga has helped to round out my teaching skills. Further study in the Himalayan mountains of India at the Association for Yoga and Meditation near the banks of the holy Ganga in Rishikesh has supplied a wealth of knowledge to share with my students. My Yoga practice has allowed me to simplify naturally and led me to a peaceful life in the mountains of Northern Thailand where I continue to teach and learn. Understanding evolution, ecology, biology and the physics behind it all has allowed me to glimpse the perfect unity of our existence and see past the illusion of separation. I work now to share that philosophy, and the practice of Yoga that arises from it - which has afforded an immense peace, joy and purpose to my life.
